Should I Still Use Painted BGs?

Posted by RyanStorm - January 27th, 2015

Just a genuine question.

I'm done with all the cel-shading stuff now, so all I have left is BGs and Editing.

I'm in the middle of a legitimate uncertainty though. From what I've seen, a lot of people do like the look of the hand painted BGs I use and they make it easier on me, as foreground stuff always pops out, considering it contrasts the digital characters.

However, I'm wondering if just using Photoshop or Gimp to paint some stuff will create a more professional looking final result. I'm pretty much the only online artist (I know of,) that legitimately paints BGs, I'm not sure if thats a signature thing, or just a sign of a lower quality work.

If you actually have an opinion on this, I'm very open to hearing it.

As usual, status updates:

Hand painted BGs is fucking sweet bro.

Thanks man

I think the hand-painted backgrounds are cool looking, especially when the characters really pop in front of them. In Cole Phelps everything feels a little more blurry / washed out but I think a lot of that is because it's 360p getting up-scaled on the screen.

Thanks, Cole Phelps is actually of lower video quality due to me cutting it down to the only good joke for NG. I didn't have much experience exporting with Adobe Premiere Pro at the time and after three other attempts, I thought that was the best I could get.
Now I know how to preserve video quality in the export process, so that's no longer an issue.
Your thoughts are about the same as mine lol.

I like the painted backgrounds that you add to your animations. These leave a good contrast between the two and somehow it works!

So if you'd ask me I'd say keep the painted backgrounds!

Thanks, right now it seems everyone feels about the same lol. So it looks like the paintings are gonna stick around.
Thanks for the input!
